A barber’s razor needs to be sharp. When Jack Mountain became a Christian he discovered a tool that claimed to be sharper than the sharpest dagger and changed the course of his life forever.
Jack’s Bible became as much a part of his daily routine as the razor with which he earned his living. In the fall of 1931 Jack Mountain invited a friend, one year his senior to attend a meeting at Philpott Tabernacle in Hamilton. That night, at the age of 26 Jack Bristow came face to face with the challenge of having a personal relationship with Christ.
In the spring of 1935, on the 2nd floor of the Farmers building in Milton, a small group of Christian believers began holding Gospel services on Sunday evenings.
The “Two Jacks” as they were known were key leaders of this group.
For 73 years, this church evolving from this nucleus of believers has provided a positive Christian witness to what was the quiet town of Milton and now the fastest growing community in Canada. During these seven decades, the congregation has had 6 different names and 20 different pastors. The fledgling church in the upper room of the farmers building was known as the Milton Gospel Tabernacle. In October of 1946 the name of the church became Milton Baptist Church, and when a newly formed church named themselves Bethel Baptist, the church again changed the name to Milton Gospel Chapel.
In 1953 1 acre of land was donated on Commercial Street and later further acres purchased. After many years of prayer and planning the new building was completed in June 1955 – at a cost of $19,000. From that date the Church would be know as Emmanuel Baptist Church – meaning God with us.
In 1987 the Church relocated from Commercial Street to a property west of the Town of Milton, but in 1991 returned to worship in Milton, again in rented facilities.
In 1992 Jim DeMarsh became Pastor and because of the confusion around having two Baptist Churches in Milton, the church changed its name to Milton Bible Church (legal name - Milton Bible Baptist Church) – a Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches of Canada member Church. In 1999 the Church purchased a building at 200 Main Street, Milton. The old building was demolished and after many difficult years of planning and construction the new Church was opened in March of 2004.
